Course Description

There will be two topics covered during this webinar:

1. HST: Real Property Issues & Year in Review

This presentation will use practical examples to illustrate some of the persistent and surprising problems that arise with the HST and real estate transactions. Residential and commercial transactions will be covered.

This presentation will also review important developments from the past year and look ahead to the New Year, including major Quebec Sales Tax changes starting January 1, 2019.

Soheil Talebi

Soheil has over 17 years of experience in public accounting extending to national and mid-size accounting firms in Canada and the United States. Soheil has been a partner at Lipton since 2011, and is responsible for the firm’s professional standards group. His inspiration and enthusiasm for the profession is driven by his passion to support entrepreneurs achieve their business objectives.

Soheil provides assurance and advisory services to privately-held companies and publicly traded entities in a broad range of industry sectors, including technology, real estate and construction, manufacturing and distribution, pharmaceutical, not-for-profit organizations, entertainment, financial services and more recently the medical cannabis. His business advisory services include due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, support services for Initial Public Offering and Reverse Take Over on the TSX Venture Exchange and the Canadian Stock Exchange, compilation of business plans, forecasts and projections, and litigation support, including expert testimony.

Soheil is the author and instructor of the Accounting in the Real Estate Industry and Accounting in the Construction Industry courses for CPA Ontario. He has served on technical task forces for CPA Canada, and has been a member of the practice inspection committee of CPA Ontario.

Simon Thang

Simon Thang is a sales tax lawyer and the principal of Thang Tax Law. He has over fifteen years of experience exclusively in sales taxes (GST/HST, PST).

Extensive Experience – Simon assists a diverse range of clients from established businesses to entrepreneurs, with a particular affinity for real property, public service bodies, and e-commerce. This experience gives Simon the insight to advise on a range of issues and industries, including: business purchases and reorganizations, real estate transactions, financial services and investments, cross-border transactions, medical and health professionals, and non-resident businesses. He also advises other lawyers and tax professionals who require sales tax expertise. Simon is preferred counsel to the Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LawPro), and assists LawPro in defending lawyers on tax matters.

In addition to providing sales tax advice, Simon represents clients in all phases of tax and trade disputes, from tax audit defence to tax appeals before the Tax Court of Canada.

Thought Leadership – Simon tutors the Canadian Professional Accountants’ GST/HST In-Depth course and taught the sales tax/consumption tax law course as a member of the adjunct faculty Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. Simon has written extensively in the area of sales tax and has published book chapters, papers and articles in various publications including the Canadian Tax Foundation’s. Simon is a frequent speaker on sales tax issues and has presented at the CPA Commodity Tax Symposium, at the Tax Executives Institute’s annual Canadian Tax Conference, to the Law Society of Ontario, and to the Ontario Bar Association’s Taxation Group. Simon is a member of the GST Leaders Forum, a group of 25 leading sales tax practitioners from across Canada.

Education – Simon received his Canadian law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Masters of Law (Taxation) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
