Course Description

The great majority of seniors want to age well and in place - in homes and communities they can call their own. They want to be able to choose where they live and the structure of their living arrangements. Far too many Canadian seniors get placed where they do not want to be and do not age well. But once again, too many have not taken a close look around their homes and asked themselves: Is it possible for me to live here safely, independently, and comfortably for as many years as possible as I age?

In many cases, the answer may be no for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the home has too many stairs; maybe it isn’t located close enough to family or needed health or lifestyle services. Maybe chronic health conditions require more care.

COVID - 19 is forcing older Canadians to assess whether they want to move into a care home or stay in their own homes. Since the majority wish to do the latter, this webinar will examine the pros and cons of ageing in place including:

  • Long Term Care: What’s Gone Wrong?
  • The Care Continuum – Accommodation Options/Costs
  • 8 Steps For Successful Ageing In Place
  • Why Plan Now?
  • Summary Slides – Client Action Plan
  • Resources

Looking ahead and having a plan gives your clients – and your families - control. Rather than leaving things up to chance, they get to make the choices and decisions that they want to make—not those that someone else wants.

Karen’s father died of the flu 20 years ago in a long term care home. As the result of this life changing dementia care experience, Karen founded the Long Term Care Planning Network, Canada’s leading resource centre for ageing and long term care planning and education. Her seminar series, web site and print tools are recognized as key long term care educational resources for Canadians, their families and their professional advisors.

For over 25 years Karen has been a well-known speaker, educator, publisher and consultant in the field of long term care. Over the years she has sat on many not-for-profit/government committees concerned with ageing, Alzheimer’s disease, and elder abuse. She has created courses on ageing/long term care planning for major financial services organizations and contributed chapters to other professional courses on all aspects of caregiving and long term care.

Since the inception of COVID-19 Karen has been listening to Canadians’ worries about their long term health care system and is now spending more time advocating for seniors and educating both Canadians and their advisors about the uncertain care options in an ever changing world.
