Course Description

Will you be preparing 2020 personal tax returns for clients? Are you thinking of starting a personal tax preparation practice this year? If you are a new or recent tax practitioner, then this course is built and delivered with you in mind.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way many of us do business and our daily routines. Personal tax matters and this year’s tax preparation season will be no exception to this very fluid and difficult situation.

This course will focus on personal tax topics and T1 return preparation process by taking you through 2020 personal tax returns that will cover a wide scope of personal tax situations you will most commonly encounter in a tax practice. It will also deal with new developments over the past year as we head into an uncertain 2021.

The course is delivered with the following approach:
  • An overview of general personal tax concepts and tax preparation issues with an emphasis on developments for the 2020 T1 filing season including mock case examples and situations you can follow through from beginning to end.
  • A close look at the most frequently made errors on tax returns and how to avoid them so that you can avoid CRA reassessments after a return is filed.
  • Most commonly asked questions by new practitioners and how to address them.
  • Examples of 2020 T1 returns that will outline new and ongoing CRA review, audit and tax initiatives so that you will know what will raise flags with the CRA once a personal return is filed. This will enable you to be proactive and address tax issues so they don’t become a problem with CRA.

Once you have completed this session, you will have a solid foundation and understanding of tax matters as they relate to the majority of tax returns and issues you will encounter in practice. You will also be up to date with important changes for the 2020 T1 year.

Prerequisite: You should have a good understanding of personal tax as this course will not review the basic or general tax concepts and rules, but rather focus on their application to real world client scenarios and problem areas.
